| Snorkelling. This has got to be
one of the best snorkelling
spots in Mozambique. The lighthouse
reef, running at angle from
the shore for about 400m, offers
calm and protected water on
the inner edge, suitable for
kids and beginners. The depth
ranges from 1m down to 5m and
offers pool-like conditions
(our scuba pool training is
done here!). The
reef is home to hundreds of
reef fish, lion fish, stone
fish, a multitude of eels, shrimps,
crayfish, cuttle fish, star
fish, octopus, nudibranches
and a garden of soft and hard
corals. There is always something
new to see! The scuba centre
offers regular snorkel trips
by boat out to this reef, as
well as trips further out to
swim with the amazing whale
shark and dolphins. This is
an experience you will never
forget. One of our better spots
has produced sightings of over
15 whale shark at once. The
whale shark are happy to hang
around with the snorkellers
provided that they are not touched
– this usually sends them diving
down. Whale shark are found
all year round. For
those of you who have never
snorkelled, we offer a basic
introductory course, this includes
kids. Once hooked, you’ll never
look back! |

| Fishing. For the angler, whether he is
a fly fisherman, game fisherman
or surf fisherman, the area
offers excellent opportunities.
Large kingfish are often taken
off the rocks on the beach by
surf and fly fishermen. Poppers
have a high success rate. There
is a local fisherman with a
homemade rod and reel that regularly
lands giant kingfish of over
20kg. For the game fishermen
whether of a paddle ski or ski
boat, the deep channel in front
of the local reef produces fine
catches. As with all fishing
there is a lot of skill, luck
and patience involved. I’m not
sure in what proportions but
I do know it’s no good sitting
at your chalet admiring the
view when you should have your
rod in the water! |

| Market. In the nearby town of Inhambane,
one can take time to meet the
friendly local people, stroll
through the market, visit the
museum and African crafts shops.
Most provisions can be purchased
in and around the market. Mozambique
is well-known for its two tier
pricing system and it often
pays off to try a bit of hard
bargaining. There are a number
of local cafes/restaurants that
don’t look much from the outside
but offer good meals. Vasco
da Gama, a Portuguese seafarer,
discovered Inhambane in 1498
and called it “Terra de Boa
Gente” which means land of the
kind people. Inhambane has a
long history a lot of which
is recorded in the local museum.
Much closer to the resort in
the surrounding area, are local
markets. Here one has the chance
to buy traditionally baked bread,
pao or take a drink in one of
the local Shabins. Local hawkers
regularly visit the resort with
their wares, selling fresh bread,
prawns, fish and curios. |

| Dhow
trips. It’s definitely
worth taking a dhow trip around
the Inhambane Bay. These boats
have been used for centuries
and their captains are very
experienced. Various trips are
on offer depending on your budget,
weather conditions and available
time. A trip across the bay
to nearby Maxixe should cost
about 20,000 Meticais and a
full sight seeing trip for the
complete hire of the boat about
400,000 Mets (this equates to
approx. R120). It’s a good idea to negotiate
the rate inclusive of your car
security, payment being made
once you return and find all
is in order. Vehicles can be
parked in the main street next
to the quayside. |

| 4x4
Drives. The area surrounding
the lodge offers beautiful 4
x 4 driving through the coconut
plantations. Believe it or not
Inhambane Province has over
500 species of birds and if
you take the time to stop at
a quiet place you will be amazed
at what there is to see from
spiders to snakes to birds.
All tracks are sandy and it’s
advisable to drop your tyre
pressure to 1bar so as to minimize
damage to the environment. Take
care not to drive over any cultivated
lands as this will infuriate
the local farmers who would
be within their rights to claim
damages. A
short drive down the beach and
up on to one of the higher sand
dunes in the area takes us to
“Top of the World” with a 360
degree view. This is a very
special place to enjoy sundowners.
Remember to bring all your rubbish
home with you. |

| |
| The
beach in front of the resort
is probably one of the finest
you’ll ever visit. It’s important
that we keep it this way. It
stretches for miles giving one
the opportunity to collect shells
that have been washed up. There
are many different types of
shells and this is a favourite
past time for those who don’t
dive. Although the locals sell
shells on the beach, the majority
of these have been taken out
alive and we urge you not to
buy them. Any shell washed up
on the beach has spent it’s
life and deserves to be collected
and enjoyed. When walking on
the beach it’s a good idea not
to leave any clothing or personal
effects unattended. Like anywhere
else in the world these could
go missing when you turn your
back. |
