Barra Lodge

Barra Lodge can be found in the most scenic areas in Mozambique with the most amazing views of the unspoilt and crystal clear waters of the warm Indian Ocean. The resort offer several casitas, bunk houses and self catering cottages. The activity desk offers a variety of activities to entertain the family, such as:

• Horse riding

• Quad biking

• Cultural tours

• And much more

On the hot Mozambican days, the swimming pool is the perfect place to relax – if this is not for you, then the bar is also there to cool you down with a traditional 2M beer. Barra Lodge Restaurant can be found on the beach front with a variety of food for the whole family.

Our dive centre can be found on the beach. All of our diving in the ocean is enjoyed from semi-rigid diving boats. No anchors are dropped on our reefs and the dive masters carry a buoy line.

Snorkelling and Ocean safari trips are also offered by Barra Lodge. The ocean safari is where we search for anything on the surface such as dolphins, whale sharks, humpback whales and pelagic fish feeding and hunting on the surface. This is a two hour trip and depending on the season, the species mentioned below can be spotted.

The diving in Mozambique is still relatively a well-kept secret and compares with some of the best in the world. Here is something for everyone such as:

• Manta rays

• Whale sharks

• The migrating humpback whales

• Harlequin shrimps

• Frogfish

• Sea horses

• Over a 1000fish species

• Turtles

• The mythical dugong

The list is endless from the colours of the scenic yet beyond descriptive reefs to the uncharted reefs which are still getting discovered!

Dive centre

The facilities at Barra dive centre includes a log cabin dive shop, a compressor room, showers, big kitting up area, wash trays for gear, gear racks and staff to load gear. We have four boats at 6, 7, 8 and 9m and can accommodate up to 56 divers per launch of 4 boats. Safety gear is on board and we do have radio contact with the dive shop and other boats.

Our boats are captained by experienced and qualified skippers. Our dive masters are competent and very knowledgeable. We rent gear out as well as service equipment. We also do air fills.

We present TDI/SDI and CMAS courses on all levels. However, trained scuba divers of all other Dive Organizations are more than welcome at our Resort. We have instructors available so that you can start courses on any date!

Try Scuba

For the visitor who has never dived before and desperately wants to, then this is for you! We do a little bit of theory and some skills with you and take you for a dive with an instructor in our lagoon with a depth of 3 to 4 meters. This will give you an idea of Scuba Diving!

Resort Course

After you have done “Try Scuba” and you are ecstatic and want more, we upgrade you to our “Resort Course”. The training will be intensified and if you cope, we take you for a dive on our two 7-10m reefs, 800m out in the bay.

Full Courses

If you are by now “wild” with excitement and there is no stopping you, you will be upgraded to a full course. You have already paid the first bit of your full course. However if you are one of the brave ones, you can skip the first two courses and jump right into the Full Course. Then there is no stopping us from making you a responsible internationally qualified “Bubble Blower”.

Activities

Catamaran Yacht – The live aboard catamaran offers unforgettable day trips in the sheltered estuary. Trips to Pansy Island are offered as well as snorkelling and scuba diving

Charter Boat Fishing – An experienced resident fisherman are on hand to introduce you to the excellent fishing waters. A large number of game fish call these waters their home, including the sail fish and pelagic species. The area makes for a perfect destination for fishing competitions

Ski boats – The ski boats offer the latest equipment and tackle to give you the edge on catching the big ones. Please remember the ‘Tag and Release’ policy

Dhow trips – The dhows are still built as it were in ancient times. Take a trip on a dhow before this age old tradition dies out

Mangrove – Behind Barra Lodge a saltwater Mangrove can be found with crystal clear waters which can be explored by boat or on foot. This ecosystem is made up of a fascinating chain of pioneering and sacrificial plants together with a huge array of crustaceans. This is a photographers dream due to the flocks of flamingos, local fish and stunning sunsets.

Sightseeing – Inhambane City is very rich in history. Inhambane was the southerly most trading post in Africa that was used by the Arabs. Vasco da Gama landed in Inhambane in 1534. The following make Inhambane as a fascinating town to browse around:

• Old colonial Portuguese architecture

• African culture

• Local markets

A number of restaurants in and around Inhambane offer a variety of meal options.

Horse Riding – A guided horse ride on the beach is a once in a lifetime experience. Riding along the beach with the sea, sand and the wind in your face make for an unforgettable experience. Beginners are also welcome.

Quad Bikes – Firstly quad bikes and vehicles are not allowed on the beaches as we wish to preserve the rich and unspoilt marine life. To

quad bike through the coconut plantations opens new vistas. By following the paths through these areas allows you to experience the real Mozambique while riding through local villages and into the heart of Mozambique. The tours are managed by the staff of Barra

Watersports – The bay is ideal for hobbie-cat and laser dingy sailing. Snake rides, paddle ski’s, surfboards and boogie boards are just some of the activities available.

The Barra Lodge Restaurant

While relaxing to the sight and sounds of the waves gently breaking on the shore, indulge your taste buds at the restaurant which specializes in seafood. Seafood dominates the menu with prawns, calamari and fresh line fish remaining the popular choice.

The Beach Bar

This is a very popular meeting point. The tropical beach bar creates an atmosphere of relaxation where the best fisherman’s yarns can be heard. In the evenings you can enjoy the beautiful sunsets, participate in beach volley ball, pub games or you can simply just enjoy an exotic cocktail. Lunches are available at the beach bar.

The water on the west side of Barra’s peninsula is very calm and clear, because the peninsula Barra is located on has naturally protected Inhambane’s bay from strong currents and rough seas. By this, fishing is much easier for locals, especially catching the big prawns. The bays calm waters have also attracted a lot of the Dhow community and to this day, Inhambane’s harbour still has the largest fleet of working dhows!

Even though the North side of the Peninsula is not as protected from the strong currents, the waters are still very calm, making for good conditions for activities such as swimming and snorkelling. Barra won’t disappoint scuba divers with its beautiful coral reefs to explore. If you are a deep sea fishing enthusiasts, you can expect some excellent game fishing. Between April and August the Sailfish is a popular catch, while Marlin are popular between the months of September to January. Catches include:

• Giant Trevally

• Kingfish

• Bonito

• King & Queen Mackerel

• Springer

• Kawakawa

The hot rainy season is from November to the end of March. The winter which are from May to July, is mild which many guests prefer because of the lower incidence of malaria. The average maximum temperature in summer (October – March) is 30 degrees Celsius and in winter (May – August) 20 degrees Celsius. Sea temperatures vary from 22 to 32 degrees Celsius.

Shops and Fuel

The locals are very friendly here. Sometimes they will walk around with items to sell, including some of the following items:

• Fresh produce

• Pau (Portuguese rolls)

• Prawns

• Fish (if your bargaining skills are correctly, you can get it for very cheap)

• Paintings

• Arts

• Crafts

• And a few other things

At Barra Lodge is also a small shop that sells the basic toiletries, sweets and souvenirs.

TIP: The Mozambicans love clothes and if you have spare clothes, then take some with you to trade with!

Barra offers some great night life for the tourist who wants to enjoy good music and local beers with friends. Barra offers a few shops with a couple of essentials; however Tofo is a 15 to 20 minute drive where the bigger shops are available. Fuel is available at the nearby Tofo area.

Transport / Roads

Access by road is an almost pleasant drive by tarred road suitable for the passage of a normal vehicle. However, there is a sand road where a 4x4 is necessary. Those with normal vehicles will be collected from a safe parking area. For fly-in packages, you will fly to Inhambane and then be collected by the resort owners.

Humpback Whales

From June until November, the Humpback whale can be spotted off our shores, on their migratory route. Covering a distance of 16000km, it is the longest known migration on earth. We look for the tell tale sign of water spouting from their blowhole, and the huge splashing from their acrobatics. These mammals can launch themselves completely out of the water (breaching), and engage in fluke (tail) and flipper slapping. We look out for the Humpback whales haunting song which can be heard from a distance of 2km away. Each song can last between 10 and 20 minutes. This is the males that sing the song. It is thought that this is part of their mating ritual.

We will keep a respectable distance between them and the boat, especially the females, who are with their calves and are the larger of the sexes. They can reach over 15 meters in length and can weigh between 25 to 40 tons.

If you want to see these amazing creatures up close, you can do so on the ocean safari trip where you will be out to sea for two hours at a time.

Barra Lodge is the perfect family getaway for Mozambique. With a fantastic pool for the kids and stunning beach front restaurant this is a great all in one destination! The activities such as Diving, Sailing, Fishing, Quad Biking and Sunset tours are all very professionally run. There are theme nights during the week which are also fun.
